The Parable of the Blind by Pieter Bruegel the Elder is derived from Matthew 15:14:
“If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”
The painting conveys a religious message in which those without faith, or with misguided faith, are likened to the blind. It depicts six figures who have lost their sight for various reasons—such as corneal opacity, enucleation, and cataracts—rendering blindness not as an abstract lack, but as a concrete and differentiated condition.

I once had a dream in which I had gone blind and could no longer see. In that dream, I was feeling my way through space with my hands. Within that discomfort, I found myself thinking that I would no longer be able to paint.

Visual impairment appears in many forms. Difficulties with depth perception are perhaps the most common; in other cases, individuals may struggle to distinguish certain colors or perceive differences in brightness. Some cannot see yet can respond to moving objects, while in extreme cases the eyes may not function at all.
Claude Monet had cataracts, so the colors he perceived while painting differ from those we see today.
Georgia O'Keeffe’s Black Rock with Blue Sky and White Clouds was painted under conditions in which macular degeneration prevented her from seeing parts of her visual field.
Edgar Degas suffered from glaucoma, macular degeneration, and hereditary maculopathies; changes in his work have been interpreted in relation to his ophthalmological condition.
Contrary to the concern I felt in the dream, it is possible to continue making paintings even without sight. In the case of blind painters, one method involves laying down threads to construct a drawing and then applying color over it. Even without thread, one might place clips where figures are intended to be, arrange rough materials to stand in for a field, or treat cold objects as cars or bicycles. By moving these elements around, one can attempt different compositions. It is also possible to work non-representationally, without assuming any specific landscape. However, the mode of perception would inevitably be altered, and the conditions of viewing would change.
In the case of congenitally blind painters, spatial construction based on perspective can still be understood. Yet it is worth considering what kinds of possibilities emerge when space is constructed solely through touch, without any prior experience of visual perception. Just as it took generations for linear perspective to become refined, tactile modes of spatial construction would also require long periods of development to reach a comparable level of precision. In such cases, color is not used as a sensory experience but as something grounded in language and conceptual understanding.
The “Molyneux problem” asks whether a person who has been blind from birth, and who has distinguished objects through touch, would be able to recognize those same objects by sight once vision is acquired. Originally a philosophical thought experiment concerning perception, it has since been examined through real cases. It has been shown that individuals who gain sight later in life cannot immediately distinguish even a sphere from a cube, but that this perceptual confusion is gradually resolved over time. This demonstrates that the qualities of sensation derived from vision and touch differ, while also interacting in complex ways.

The figures in The Parable of the Blind ultimately fall after losing their sight. The painting clearly conveys a message grounded in the assumed superiority of vision over other senses. My works—such as

Peter Brughel

Black rock with Blue sky and white clouds는 황반변성에 의해 시야에서 부분을 볼 수 없었던 상황에서 그려진 그림이다.
