Birds have long intervened in human imagination. In the Lascaux cave paintings, a human figure with a bird’s head appears, and in other contexts, totem poles have been erected as mediators connecting the ground and the sky. Alongside the desire to resemble birds, the airplane was invented.
In The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock, birds initially create an atmosphere of unease, gradually becoming agents of concrete disaster. They also appear as vultures revealing “greed,” hovering behind a starving child.
A skilled marksman is often given the nickname “hawk-eye.” In contemporary ball sports, systems that track the position of the ball in real time are also named Hawk-Eye.
The song of the nightingale is usually associated with beauty, yet in the poetry of T. S. Eliot it is appropriated as a torn, pre-linguistic cry of pain. Birds have also been used in divination practices—interpreting the direction, speed, and type of their flight (ornithomancy)—and appear as mythological motifs, such as birds with three legs or three eyes.

Bird by the Water (2017) depicts a bird looking toward the viewer from the edge of the water. I was drawn to this image, though I could not explain why. The series of works related to birds began as an attempt to better understand that drawing from nine years ago.
