Olchi died.
He had occasionally had conjunctivitis, but he had never been seriously ill, and he wasn’t old.
At dawn, he suddnly had a seizure. He struggled to breathe for a few minutes, and then his body went limp.
Olchi, drained of all strength in death, felt lighter than when he had been asleep.
—
My younger sibling kept crying, but I couldn’t.
It just felt strange that, until moments ago, Olchi had been purring on my stomach, and now he never would again.
Sitting next to my crying sibling, I found myself thinking about what I had just said.
—
While I was massaging his heart, there was a soft “purring” sound from his nose. It sounded like the noise he used to make when he sneezed, so my sibling stopped crying for a moment and looked at him.
But I said,
“It sounds like the lungs are being compressed.”
And my sibling began to cry again—loudly, uncontrollably—apologizing for not having played with him more.
Hearing that sound, my sibling held onto a moment of hope, while I, instead, thought of the lungs being pressed.
I wasn’t exactly sad, but I wanted to cry like my sibling. I envied the way they cried, loudly and without restraint. I wanted to cry like that too, like a seven-year-old—wailing, saying I was sorry for not having played with him more.
I shouldn’t have said that his lungs were being compressed
