In early 2023, I was invited to participate in the exhibition White Painting. The project, which involved four painters, was based on the premise that when the visible color in painting is reduced to white, elements such as the support, boundaries, installation conditions, distance, and direction can become visibly foregrounded. I understood the task as producing paintings under this condition. Within this context, rather than focusing on the interaction between one image and another, I attempted to foreground the interaction between the image and the surrounding space as the central issue. I produced shaped canvases in which one side of a rectangular frame was cut into a curve, using this form to question the conventional role of the frame in separating the inside from the outside. If the rectangular frame establishes a boundary that defines the interior while excluding the exterior, the shaped canvas—because of its relatively unstable form—introduces the possibility for the inside and outside to interfere with and penetrate one another. At the same time, by arranging supports composed of both straight and curved lines in sequence, and by attempting a linear yet planar composition across the wall itself, I explored ways in which the “surface” of the work would not remain closed as a single plane but instead divide and distort the structure of the exhibition space.
