Cave paintings can be considered as paintings without testimony.
Since the discovery of the cave paintings at Lascaux, many attempts have been made to interpret prehistoric wall paintings. Yet it is still not easy to represent or fully understand the person who made these images. Usually, cave paintings are briefly explained as having been created for ritualistic purposes, and the discussion ends there. However, this explanation provides only a fragmentary understanding of the paintings.

Archaeology has revealed that the wall paintings were made using various materials such as minerals like manganese or iron, burned bones, and charcoal. In the process of establishing chronology, it has also become clear that the paintings were created over long periods of time.
The fact that we are able to see these images tens of thousands of years later is the result of many coincidences—such as caves becoming sealed—but it was also possible because the makers of the paintings were working with the awareness that someone in later generations might encounter them.

Through the wall paintings of earlier generations, they may have shared improved ways of drawing, and at times they may even have deliberately damaged the works of those who came before them. These images invite us to imagine that the people who made them experienced drawing simultaneously as ritual action, as resemblance, as combinations possible only through images, and as exchanges between confusion and order.

Although they were created tens of thousands of years ago, there are moments when they feel closer to me than the works of contemporary colleagues.
